Tints, Shades, & Tiles: An update from #4 School

It's been a while since we had a update from School #4. With all the snow delays and vacation falling on Mondays, this week was the first time I saw some of my classes in over 3 weeks! So today's post is highlighting two grades.

First up is 2nd Grade. Our current project focuses on the element of value. Students learned how value in art is the variety of different lights and darks. We learned about tints (white + color) and shades (black + color) and practiced making our own value scales. Then it was time for the main event: a painting project! Students are always very excited about painting.

I decided that this year we would try to incorporate a little bit of earth-science into our value project. We started by learning about the different phases of the moon. Then, students picked a phase of the moon and drew it onto their paper. After painting their moons white, they used tints and shades of one color to show a transition of value from light to dark.

With the painting done, our final step will be to create trees to add to our paintings. This will create some additional contrast and interest in our artworks.

Stay tuned for the final results!

And lastly, some finished Islamic art inspired tiles! The 6th grade finished up their tiles by adding black ink to stain the tiles and metallic colors to highlight their detailed designs. Here is a peek at a few of the finished tiles.
Next up, we will be learning about traditional Japanese embroidery called Sashiko.

the 100th day and Mondrian

Can you believe that it has already been 100 days of school? We are more than half-way done with the school year, but we have so many more projects left to do! Missing the first part of the year has really sped things up for me. Hopefully we will get to all of the fun art that we have planned :)

First and second grade students at #5 school have art with me on Thursday on a rotating schedule. For two weeks, I see one set of classes. The next two weeks, I see the other set of classes. This rotating-two-week schedule can get a bit hectic, so this year we are doing projects related to specific artist. Each rotation, we learn about a different artist and create a piece of artwork inspired by his or her art style.

This past rotation, students learned about the artist Piet Mondrian. They learned how his art was simplistic and graphic. He used only straight lines and limited colors (red, yellow, blue, white, & black). Students created Mondrian-inspired art by tracing overlapping squares onto white paper. They then used any three colors they wanted to color in only the 4-sided shapes on their papers with watercolor crayons. The following week they used water to activate the watercolor crayons and finish their artwork.
