the 100th day and Mondrian

Can you believe that it has already been 100 days of school? We are more than half-way done with the school year, but we have so many more projects left to do! Missing the first part of the year has really sped things up for me. Hopefully we will get to all of the fun art that we have planned :)

First and second grade students at #5 school have art with me on Thursday on a rotating schedule. For two weeks, I see one set of classes. The next two weeks, I see the other set of classes. This rotating-two-week schedule can get a bit hectic, so this year we are doing projects related to specific artist. Each rotation, we learn about a different artist and create a piece of artwork inspired by his or her art style.

This past rotation, students learned about the artist Piet Mondrian. They learned how his art was simplistic and graphic. He used only straight lines and limited colors (red, yellow, blue, white, & black). Students created Mondrian-inspired art by tracing overlapping squares onto white paper. They then used any three colors they wanted to color in only the 4-sided shapes on their papers with watercolor crayons. The following week they used water to activate the watercolor crayons and finish their artwork.
